Damon Wayans
@The Improv - Houston

January 9th-12th, 2020

Funny man Damon Wayans makes his way to the Katy Freeway this weekend (January 10th-12th, 2020) at Houston's Improv. In 2015 the comedian retired from stand-up, recently in an interview with the Phoenix New Times.com he elaborated on why this happened about five years ago.
     "I think you can walk away from the stage, but you can't walk away from your brain. And what happens with comedians is you think stand-up all the time. And if you don't, you start, uh... well, I can tell a comedian who hasn't been on stage for a while based on the interviews that they do on TV. I can see that they look down, they're not as confident. And they throw away jokes that they would usually lean into? Like Kevin Hart is always on, and he's not afraid to be on. Dave Chappelle too. He has a swag, because he's like, "I was just on-stage last night, so I know this works," as opposed to, "I'm not really sure."

Hello, Dolly!
Hobby Center
Sarofim Hall
Houston, TX
January 7th-12th, 2020

This staged musical classic continues to wow theatre audiences with revival after revival. It all started in 1964 with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman with direction and choreography by Gower Champion There was also a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. The musical follows the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a strong-willed matchmaker, as she travels to Yonkers, New York to find a match for the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder. This weekend the rival makes its way to Houston's Hobby Center, January 7th through 12th, 2020.

Hello, Dolly! first debuted at the Fisher Theater in Detroit back in 1963, then eventually moving to Broadway by producer David Merrick in 1964, winning 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This set a record which the play held for thirty-seven years. The show album Hello, Dolly! An Original Cast Recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The album reached number one on the Billboard album chart in 1964 and was replaced the next week by Louis Armstrong's album Hello, Dolly! Armstrong was featured in the film version of the show, performing a small part of the song "Hello, Dolly!".
