As school sessions wind down and Memorial Day approaches, (Weekend of May 31st-June 2nd, 2024)Greater Houston gears up for a long weekend filled with remembrance and community activities. Memorial Day, a federal holiday originally known as Decoration Day, honors the U.S. military personnel who have fallen in the line of duty. This day of remembrance, which now falls on the last Monday of May, transforms the city as many visit cemeteries and memorials to pay their respects, often marking graves with American flags to honor those who served.

While Memorial Day is a time for reflection, it also unofficially ushers in the summer season. This weekend promises clear skies—a welcome change from last week's disruptive thunderstorms—and an array of events throughout Houston. Whether you're interested in exploring local festivities or enjoying a quiet weekend of reflection, there's something for everyone in Houston.  Stay tuned for more details on how to make the most of this unofficial start to summer next weekend.Have a great weekend, Houston!

Rallying Voices of the Past: Newsies at Theatre Under The Stars

Under the twinkling lights of Theatre Under The Stars, the cobbled streets of New York City come alive with the defiant chants of "Newsies." This Friday, May 24th, at 8:00 PM, immerse yourself in the rousing narrative of young newsboys in a David-versus-Goliath battle against the big newspaper tycoons. With electrifying choreography and anthems that echo the heartbeats of hope and resistance, this musical doesn’t just tell a story—it sparks a movement. Let the powerful performances and inspiring songs uplift your spirit as you root for the underdogs in their fight for justice.

A Spirited Twist on the Classics: Drunk Shakespeare at the Emerald Theatre

Just an hour later, at 9:00 PM, the Emerald Theatre proposes a toast to the ingenious and the irreverent with "Drunk Shakespeare." This isn’t your high school English class’s Shakespeare; it’s Shakespeare with a shot of humor and a pint of contemporary flair. As actors balance their lines with their liquor, expect to be pulled into an unpredictable whirlwind of Elizabethan eloquence seasoned with unabashed modern-day hilarity. It’s a performance where the fourth wall is tipsily toppled, inviting you to laugh along as each actor’s sip leads to increasingly riotous renditions of the Bard’s finest.

In Houston this weekend, every corner offers a story, and every venue invites you to be part of it. Whether you're swayed by the rhythms of "Newsies," amused by the antics of "Drunk Shakespeare," energized by the prospects at Cup of Joey, or entertained by Jordan Jensen, the city ensures your weekend is anything but ordinary.
