As the fifth month of the Gregorian and Julian calendars, May heralds the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Its name traces back to the Greek goddess Maia, also known as Bona Dea in Roman mythology, symbolizing fertility and growth.
In the northern regions, May marks a transition from the lingering chill of winter to the vibrant warmth of spring. The brisk winds and early spring showers give way to blooming flowers and the lively chatter of birds. Nature's renewal brings a sense of joy and rejuvenation to the air.
One notable celebration in May is Mother's Day, observed on the second Sunday of the month. The origins of this day can be traced back to the 19th century when Julia Ward Howe advocated for a day dedicated to promoting peace and disarmament among women. Although initially celebrated in Boston, it gained widespread recognition thanks to Anna Jarvis, who held a private Mother's Day commemoration in 1907 in honor of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis
Ann Reeves Jarvis, a Civil War peace activist, had organized "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve public health. Anna Jarvis, inspired by her mother's legacy, campaigned for Mother's Day to become a national holiday. With support from John Wanamaker, a prominent Philadelphia merchant, the first official Mother's Day service took place in 1908 at Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
Today, the church stands as the International Mother's Day Shrine, a testament to maternal love and dedication. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday, to be celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May.
As Mother's Day approaches, communities in Greater Houston are gearing up for a variety of activities to honor and cherish mothers. Keep an eye on our Weekend Sunday page for exciting events and ways to celebrate this special day with your loved ones.
