Friday 11/6/2024 8:00 PM
Jo Koy, one of today's top stand-up comedians, is set to take the stage at Houston's Toyota Center this weekend, bringing his signature blend of humor and heart. Koy’s journey from performing at a small Las Vegas coffee house to selling out arenas worldwide is nothing short of extraordinary, and his return to Houston promises a night of laughter, family tales, and cultural insights.
Comedian Jo Koy
Koy's stage name has a special origin story, rooted in his Filipino heritage and a childhood memory.
As the comedian recalls, the name "Koy" was born when his aunt, calling him to dinner, shouted, "Jo Ko, eat!"—a phrase he misheard. In Tagalog, "Ko" means "my," so his aunt was affectionately calling him "my Jo." The name stuck, and "Jo Koy" became the moniker under which he has since built a comedic empire.
Koy’s career has been marked by numerous milestones, including receiving the prestigious “Stand-Up Comedian of the Year” award at the 2018 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.
He has also released several successful comedy specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, with his 2019 special, "Comin’ In Hot", continuing to stream worldwide. His unique perspective on raising a millennial, navigating Filipino traditions, and more, has resonated with audiences around the globe.
In a post-show interview, Koy reflected on the tough gig of hosting, noting that while he’s a seasoned stand-up comic, hosting an awards show requires a different skill set.
“I had fun,” he shared, “Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic, but that hosting position is a different style. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
