Astros hopes to regain consistency
vs. White Sox

HOUSTON — The Houston Astros salvaged a split of their six-game road trip with a victory at Texas on Wednesday, setting the stage for what could be the most critical stretch of their schedule.

Houston returns to host the opener of a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox and an 11-game homestand that will carry the Astros (57-31) into the All-Star break.

Following their team record-tying 12-game winning streak last month, the Astros have gone a pedestrian 8-6. They have been unable to shake the Seattle Mariners (55-32) in the chase for the American League West pennant and remain behind the Boston Red Sox (59-29) and New York Yankees (56-28) in pursuit of the best record in the majors.

The Astros could gain significant ground in the standings with a dominating homestand facing two teams below .500, the White Sox and Detroit Tigers (38-50), sandwiched around a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics, against whom Houston is 8-1 this season.

Recency Bias
White Sox

The White Sox have been one of three laughingstock teams this season, challenging the Royals and Orioles for that honor. They would recently stumble in their race to the bottom, however, becoming the 28th team to win 30 games just this past Tuesday. They have managed to play closer to .500 ball in the past few series, but this year is a lost one for the rebuilding White Sox. In the past week they’ve really only had two hitters distinguishing themselves. Avisaíl García has been potent recently, slashing .424/.457/.970 with 4 homers in his past seven games. Matt Davidson has also had a great week with an impressive .368/.478/.684 slash line and debuting at pitcher with a clean 1.0 IP and a strikeout.

Houston Astros vs. Chicago White Sox
7/5/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Chicago White Sox will be looking for some measure of consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last five games, including a 7-4 loss in their series finale against Cincinnati last time out. Yoan Moncada led the White Sox with two RBIs, going 1 for 4 with a home run, while Daniel Palka added a solo home run and Yolmer Sanchez chipped in an RBI with a double to cap off the White Sox scoring in the loss. Avail Garcia added a double and Adam Engel went 2 for 4 while Kevan Smith, Leury Garcia and Tim Anderson each contributed base hits as well in the defeat. Dylan Covey took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits over just 3.2 innings of work to fall to 3-4 this season. Carlos Rodon will start game one and is 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA and 22 strikeouts this season. In his career, Rodon is 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 20 strikeouts against Houston.
