Saturday 4/20/2024 Noon-5:00 PM
Discovery Green Conservancy, in collaboration with Citizens’ Environmental Coalition, is thrilled to present this year’s Green Mountain Energy Earth Day celebration, featuring the Houston Public Works Water Works Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 12 pm to 5 pm, this free event promises a day of art, inspiration, and environmental awareness for all.
The theme for this year’s Earth Day is art as a catalyst for change. Art has a unique ability to inspire and provoke action, and this event aims to harness that power to engage attendees in environmental activism. As we celebrate Earth Day, we also celebrate the artist and activist in each of us.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE
EARTH DAY?
Earth Day has its roots in growing concern over pollution in the 1960s, when author Rachel Carson's 1962 book “Silent Spring,” about the pesticide DDT and its damaging effects on the food chain, hit bestseller lists and raised awareness about nature's delicate balance.
Artistic Engagements
The day kicks off with the Calmecac Indigenous Arts Dancers' mesmerizing opening ceremony, followed by remarks from Green Mountain Energy Earth Day organizers. The lineup includes captivating performances by Lee’s Golden Dragon and Lion Dance Team, live painting sessions by Houston artists Donkeeboy and Donkeemom, and thought-provoking short films highlighting environmental challenges and solutions.
Scrapdaddy Circus and Parallel Painting
One of the event's highlights is the Scrapdaddy Circus, a captivating display of kinetic sculptures and artcars by Houston-based artist Mark “Scrapdaddy” Bradford. Known for his innovative use of salvaged materials, Bradford’s work embodies the spirit of recycling and creativity. Visitors can also witness live parallel painting sessions by local artists, adding a dynamic layer to the day’s artistic endeavors.
Live Performances
and Documentary Shorts
Throughout the event, live art demonstrations and performances will engage audiences, including the energetic tunes of Jukebox Trainwreck. Documentary shorts like “The Place Man” and “There’s Something in the Water” shed light on environmental pioneers and challenges, inviting reflection and dialogue.
Electric Car Petting Zoo
and Exhibitor Highlights
For a glimpse into the future, the Electric Car Petting Zoo showcases cutting-edge electric vehicles, allowing attendees to interact with owners and learn about sustainable transportation. More than 60 exhibitors will offer educational experiences, from wildlife conservation demonstrations to initiatives promoting recycling, water conservation, and carbon offsetting.
Be a Zero Hero for Zero Waste
Embracing a zero-waste ethos, the Green Mountain Energy Earth Day aims to divert 90% of all waste from landfills. Visitors are encouraged to participate in this eco-conscious effort by bringing refillable water bottles and utensils. Volunteers will facilitate waste sorting, ensuring a seamless and sustainable experience for all.
