Since the start of her career Aguilera's voice has been compared to that of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. The New York Times music critic, Davie Growne noted that Aguilera's vocal performance was highly influenced by Carey and Houston, sharing that "Aguilera has been one of the foremost practitioners of the overpowering, Category 5 vocal style known as melisma", and "Ms. Carey, Ms. Houston and Ms. Aguilera, to name its three main champions, are most associated with the period from the late '80s through the late '90s". Ann Powers of The Los Angeles Times said there are influences of Barbra Streisand, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin on Aguilera's vocal style, opining that the "Aguilera's Streisand-esque tendencies" "[help Aguilera] figure out how to become the 'great singer' she's been dubbed since she released her first single, the wise-beyond-its-years 'Genie in a Bottle', at 18". Sasha Frere-Jones wrote in The New Yorker, "Aguilera doesn't need to reincarnate Sarah Vaughan to be a serious singer. She already is one, in the tradition of nineteen-nineties pop and R&B, skillfully deploying melisma for razzle-dazzle".

In 2003, Aguilera placed 5th on MTV's "Best Voices in Music Ever" list, while ranking in both COVE and Latina magazine's best Pop and Latina vocalist of all time in 2004 and 2013 respectively. In a review for Liberation, Jon Pareles of The New York Times describes Aguilera's vocal versatility, stating; "Nothing less than high drama suits Christina Aguilera’s voice. She can be brassy, tearful, sultry, gritty, breathy, sweet or furious. She can belt and she can tease; she can aim a note as directly as a missile or turn its trajectory into an aerobatic spiral of leaping, quivering, scalloping melismas. Her voice is not an instrument for making modest statements; it’s about peaks of self-affirmation, indescribable sensual pleasures, steely counterattacks and abysses of sorrow".

Aguilera by many is already considered a pop icon, and has frequently received comparisons to Britney Spears. It was David Browne writing in Entertainment Weekly said that Aguilera is "too eager not to offend" in her mild-mannered music, making her a "good girl pretending to be bad", and also said that Spears' "artificial-sweetener voice" was a welcome change of pace from Aguilera's "numbing vocal gymnastics". Matthew Horton from Virgin Media suggested that Aguilera was a more impressive performer than Spears despite her lower sales figures. Aguilera has also been regarded as a sex symbol.

In a 2003 issue of Maxim magazine her cover became its best-selling issue; Aguilera was named "Sexiest Woman of the Year" by its subscribers later that year, and also earned the magazine its best-selling issue after posing on the cover that year. Additionally recognized as a gay icon, she was the first honoree on The Abbey's Gay Walk of Fame for her contributions to the LGBT community. The music video for "Beautiful" earned Aguilera a GLAAD Media Award for its positive portrayal of the LGBT community.

Wael Kfoury

Friday 11/2/2018 10:00 PM

He is considered one of the most popular figures in Arabic music and is often called The King of Romance or simply The King. In a career spanning over 25 years, he has become a Lebanese icon through his romantic songs.

Wael attempted his first shot at singing in the 1990s on the famous LBC talent show, Studio Al Fan. He won the title of best singer. His first record deal was with Music Box. His first hit was the song "Ma Wa'adtak Binjoom El Lail", followed by "Shafouha Wa Saro Ye'olou". He released several albums afterwards, the most notable of which were "Hekayet Aasheq" and "Sa'alouni". After joining the army, his albums dropped in sales (due to his absence from the scene). However, he made a great comeback in 2002 with his album "Omri Kello".

In late 2004, he produced another hit album called "Arreb Layeh", proving that he was indeed a versatile artist. In 2006, he returned yet again with the "Wael 2006", from which he released the pan-Arab World hit single "Bhebbak Ana Ktir". His most recent album, "Bihen", was released on October 12, 2007.

Those who have followed BoDeans’ remarkable 30-year musical career know that their blend of compelling songs and high energy performances have retained an unpretentious rock & roll loyal following like no other. BoDeans is best known for their catchy single, “Closer To Free,”. The band’s accessible adult alternative sound has led to many a milestone, including a Rolling Stone Reader’s Poll for Best New American Band in 1987, and support slots with U2, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, George Thorogood, The Pretenders, David Bowie and numerous others.

Appearances at Farm Aid, Summerfest, ACL Festival and others followed, along with TV appearances on “Saturday NightLive,” “Letterman,” “Today,” “Imus,” CNN, and ESPN, to name a few. BoDeans have a permanent installation at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland as part of their Midwest Artists exhibit. After multiple chart-topping radio singles, and TV placements, BoDeans have defined a generation that embraced songs like “Good Things,” “You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” “If It Makes You,” “Closer To Free,” “Stay,” and “All The World.”

BoDeans signed their first recording contract with Slash/Warner Brothers Records in 1985 and their debut record, “Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams” was released May, 1986. Since then, they have released 12 studio albums with ten records that hit the Billboard Top 200 Chart, and numerous singles on the Mainstream Rock, Top 40 and Triple A radio charts.

Few would expect them to still be going strong – so many years after Wisconsin’s favorite musical sons first formed, but they’ve proved as energetic and determined as they did on day one. Their music isfeatured throughout the new Netflix original series, “The Ranch,” which features Sam Elliott, Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson and Debra Winger. They have major festival dates confirmed for the summer, and a new single coming out that is sure to be another chart-topper.

BoDeans now reside in a small group of bands that have managed to survive the ups and downs of the industry, remaining true to their sound and their style, for 30 years, and show no signs of slowing down.

BoDeans at The Heights Theatre with special guest Tolan Shaw.

Houston Grand Opera Presents
La Boheme
Brown Theater
@Wortham Center

Performances now thru  November 11, 2018

This two hour and fiftheen minute performance of Pucini's La Boheme at Wortham Center is the great love story imagined by its creator.

La bohème has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide.
It is interesting to note here, the world premiere of La bohème was in Turin in 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini; its U.S. premiere took place the following year, 1897, in Los Angeles.

In 1946, fifty years after the opera's premiere, Toscanini conducted a commemorative performance of it on the radio with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. A recording of the performance was later released by RCA Victor on vinyl record, tape and compact disc. It is the only recording ever made of a Puccini opera by its original conductor.

La bohème is based on Henri Murger's novel, Scènes de la vie de bohème, a collection of vignettes portraying young bohemians living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840s. Although usually called a novel, it has no unified plot. Like the 1849 play by Murger and Théodore Barrière, the opera's libretto focuses on the relationship between Rodolfo and Mimì, ending with her death. Also like the play, the libretto combines two characters from the novel, Mimì and Francine, into the single character of Mimì. Early in the composition stage Puccini was in dispute with the composer Leoncavallo, who said that he had offered Puccini a completed libretto and felt that Puccini should defer to him. Puccini responded that he had had no idea of Leoncavallo's interest and that having been working on his own version for some time, he felt that he could not oblige him by discontinuing with the opera. Leoncavallo completed his own version in which Marcello was sung by a tenor and Rodolfo by a baritone. It was unsuccessful and is now rarely performed.
