Lone Star State teams are set to square off in the playoffs as Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs take on James Harden and the Rockets
It’s an NBA Texas Two-Step in one half of the Western Conference bracket as I-10 rivals Houston and San Antonio square off in yet another juicy second round series.
A lot was made about James Harden battling fellow MVP candidate Russell Westbrook in the last round but there is no rest for the weary as he goes up against another one in the Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard. Each player’s transformation the past few years has been a joy for most to watch and now we’ll get to see them both go right at their opposite number on both ends of the court. All things considered, this has the feel of a conference finals matchup of heavyweights — albeit a tad earlier than normal thanks to all that depth in the West.

It’s the familiar foes who will square off in the NBA Playoffs Western Conference Semi-finals, fighting for the right to become the true Warriors’ challenger they seemingly were during the regular season. Incredibly, the San Antonio Spurs will meet the division rival Houston Rockets for the first time since 1995, despite the fact that they haven’t missed the playoffs in 20 years. It’s great sign for the Rockets though, as they went to win the championship that season for the last time.
#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #3 Houston Rockets

The Spurs and the Rockets have played two games very early in the season and only once since Dec 20th, so there isn’t much to judge their match-up on, especially considering that the Rockets have changed their outlook during the season with Beverley recovering from an injury and by adding key reserve Lou Williams. Still, each game was very close and three meetings were decided by a single shot. San Antonio won three times, twice in Houston.

Game 1 Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Houston Rockets

After both sides took care of business in the first round, the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are set to lock horns in the Western Conference semifinals. As the best two teams in the league that didn’t have Kevin Durant join them last summer, the Texas-based sides dominated all season as polar opposites. These franchises have been fated to face off in the postseason for much of the year, pitting a stout defense against one of the league’s best offenses of all-time.

Just as James Harden defeated one of his competitors for MVP honors last round, he’ll be asked to take down the Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard next. Although the Spurs took the regular season series with a 3-1 record, the Rockets have the offensive firepower to outpace any team on a given night.
