Chris Stapleton

Mitchell Pavilion

Saturday 10/13/2022 7:00 PM
Gates Open 6:00 PM

Chris Stapleton spent years in Nashville as a sought-after songwriter, furnishing songs for numerous artists. Easy to spot due to his signature long hair and prodigious beard, he became a major star in the autumn of 2015 when his debut solo album, "Traveller", practically swept the CMAs. This weekend Chris Stapleton plays The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

"Traveller" subsequently went platinum and Stapleton followed it up by drawing on his own vast repertoire of songs. In 2017 he released "From a Room: Volume 1", which won the CMA award for Album of the Year. That same year he released "From a Room: Volume 2.

Chris Stapleton - Starting Over

 After meeting some local songwriters in his hometown, Stapleton discovered that songwriting was a viable profession. In a 2016 interview with CBS News, he said: "I always thought that George Strait was singing a song, he made it up, and that was the end of it. But the instant I found out that that could be a job, I thought, 'That's the job for me.'"

Cigarettes After Sex
@713 Music Hall

Friday 10/13/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Fred Thomas] Ambient pop collective Cigarettes After Sex grew out of an experimental sound project by songwriter Greg Gonzalez. The band's hushed, dreamy music earned a devoted international fan base in the mid-2010s with a combination of elegantly crafted singles, EPs, and viral YouTube videos, which led up to their 2017 eponymous debut. A second album, Cry, appeared in 2019, building on their success. After a collaborative EP credited to Gonzalez and Daniele Luppi (Charm of Pleasure), Cigarettes After Sex re-emerged in 2022 with the single "Pistol," with two more cuts, "Bubblegum" and "Stop Waiting," arrived in 2023.

The group was formed almost accidentally in 2008 while Gonzalez was living in El Paso, Texas. Then a student at University of Texas, he was experimenting with capturing the spacious sound of recording songs in a four-story stairwell at the university. These dreamy tunes would make up the first Cigarettes After Sex EP, I., which was released in 2012. After relocating to Brooklyn, Gonzalez continued work on the band, enlisting the help of a loose cast of collaborators including Phillip Tubbs, Randy Miller, Jacob Tomsky, Steve Herrada, Emily Davis, and Greg Leeah. Output from the collective appeared mostly in the form of singles, EPs, and immensely popular YouTube clips. One of their most notable tracks was a 2015 reworking of REO Speedwagon's power ballad "Keep on Loving You."

Following a swell of attention online, Cigarettes After Sex began to work on a full-length debut. The self-titled effort arrived in 2017, almost a decade after the band's inception. That year, the single "Apocalypse" was an indie hit in parts of Europe, landing on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in the U.S. (number 16).  Read more @All Music.com (Click Here)

Edith Marquez
@Houston Arena Theatre

Friday 10/13/2023 9:00 PM

[From All Music.c-Evan C. Gutierrez] Edith Márquez's musical accomplishments are broad and impressive, but it is indisputably her membership in the flagship pop group Timbiriche that ushered her into Mexican stardom. Born on January 27, 1973, in Mexico City, Márquez exhibited talent early on as a performer and singer. She participated in televised singing competitions as a child, including Canta, Canta and Juguemos a Cantar. Her success on the screen lead to roles in popular programs and telenovelas like Papá Soltero, Agujetas de Color de Rosa, and Sentimientos Ajenos. Márquez was invited to join the then-fledgling teen pop group Timbiriche, which quickly experienced amazing market success. Songs like "Pasos," "Máscaras," and "Yo No Soy una Más" took Timbiriche to the heights of the Latin pop world.

Having enjoyed years of success, Márquez left Timbiriche to focus on personal matters, including her relationship with musician Alberto Sánchez and the birth of their child Sebastián. In 1998 Márquez initiated her career as a solo artist with the release of her debut record, entitled Frente a Ti, on Warner Music México. On the strength of singles like "Por Hablarle de Tí" and "Mírame," the album sold better than 250,000 units in Mexico alone. Subsequent releases experienced similar success. Enhypen
@Toyota Center

Friday 10/13/2023 7:30 PM

[From All Music.com-John D. Buchanan] South Korean boy band Enhypen aim to connect (as the "hyphen" of the group's name suggests) with their conceptual brand of smooth R&B-dance-pop, as on their debut EP, 2020's Border: Day One. That set's follow-up, Border: Carnival, appeared the following year and went straight to number one in Korea and on the U.S. World chart. All this paved the way for the group's full-length debut, DIMENSION: DILEMMA, which arrived later in 2021 and again topped the Korean charts and hit number 11 on the Billboard 200. 2022's Manifesto: Day 1 and 2023's Dark Blood extended their chart dominance.

ENHYPEN (엔하이픈) ‘CRIMINAL LOVE’ @ 롯데월드 X 엔하이픈: DARK MOON Special Stage

Enhypen was the first product of the newly formed Belift Lab, a joint venture between entertainment giants CJ E&M and Big Hit. The group was formed, like many of their peers, via a reality-survival show, in this case I-Land, which aired between June and September 2020. The show's seven winners, who went on to form Enhypen, were Heeseung, U.S.-born Jay, Australia-born Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, leader Jungwon, and Japan-born Ni-ki. Like all K-pop stars, their act was characterized by high production values, top-drawer singing, and tight, ultra-professional "point" choreography. The group's name -- and concept of "connection, discovery, and growth" -- was based on the hyphen, which connects words together. Enhypen were teased by a series of cinematic trailer videos, creating huge hype that pre-sold 300,000 copies of their debut mini-album, Border: Day One. Released in November 2020 in two versions, "Dusk" and "Dawn," it entered the Korean chart at number four, selling a further 95,000 copies in its first week of release. Its lead track was the smooth, eerie "Given-Taken," showcasing a vaguely gothic, vampiric concept in slick R&B-dance-pop. Read more @All Music.com. (Click Here)
