Flatland Cavalry
@713 Music Hall

Friday 3/24/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-James Christopher Monger] A spirited country-folk and Americana outfit based out of Lubbock, Texas, Flatland Cavalry draw inspiration from Lone Star State contemporaries like Turnpike Troubadours, Wade Bowen, and Randy Rogers, as well as folk-pop artists like Avett Brothers and John Mayer. The group's music often puts fiddle and acoustic guitar up front to give the tunes a strong, rootsy influence tied to the past, but the melodies have a modern feel and are powered by a rock & roll backbeat. The group made a strong full-length debut with 2016's Humble Folks, while a few years of touring helped them achieve the tighter and more unified sound on subsequent releases like 2019's Homeland Insecurity and 2021's Welcome to Countryland.

Flatland Cavalry
If We Said Goodbye

Founded in 2012 by longtime friends Cleto Cordero (guitar, vocals) and Jason Albers (drums), Flatland Cavalry eventually blossomed into a five-piece with the additions of Jonathan Saenz (bass), Laura Jane (fiddle), and Reid Dillion (guitar). After raising recording costs with a crowd-funding campaign, the band released its debut EP, Come May, independently in 2015; it was quickly scooped up by California-based booking agency Atomic Music Group. The following year saw Flatland Cavalry issue their first full-length outing, Humble Folks

Kem, Ledisi
Musiq Soulchild
@Toyota Center

Friday 3/24/2023 7:00 PM

This weekend its Kem and Ledisi in their “Soul II Soul Tour”. The Grammy® Award-recognized artists will take the stage with special guest Musiq Soulchild. Treasured as one of the redefining voices of contemporary music, Kem has been compared to renowned artists, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. Ledisi is a twelve-time Grammy nominated powerhouse vocalist with a career spanning almost two decades.

Kem
I Can't Stop Loving You

[From All Music.com-Andy Kellman]
Complementing his thoughtful and positive songwriting with a gently uplifting sound, Kem continues in the tradition of the quiet storm radio format exemplified by the likes of fellow Detroiters Smokey Robinson and Anita Baker. The singer, songwriter, musician, and producer has been one the most successful adult contemporary R&B artists since his self-released debut, Kemistry (2002), prompted a deal with Motown Records.

[From All Music.com-Andy Kellman] Ledisi was one of R&B's best-kept secrets, a successful and dynamic independent artist with a couple well-regarded albums to her credit, until she reached a new level with Lost & Found (2007). The start of a decade-long association with Verve Forecast and an even lengthier partnership with fellow songwriter/producer Rex Rideout, the album went Top Ten R&B/hip-hop, spawned a handful singles embraced by radio, and led to Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best R&B Album. [From All Music.com-Andy Kellman] Musiq Soulchild's foundation in classic soul and organic hip-hop, combined with his innate romantic and affable everyman style, has translated to longevity and acclaim spanning decades. The Philadelphian singer/songwriter arrived behind the similarly rooted likes of D'Angelo, Maxwell, and Erykah Badu -- artists who had successfully gone against the grain of pop-flavored urban contemporary radio programming -- and immediately distinguished himself at the dawn of the 2000s.

Arise Roots
@Scout Bar

 Friday 3/24/2023 8:00 PM

[From rootfire.com] Arise Roots was formed in 2010 with the passion to create a new, unique roots-reggae band. Rising up from the streets of Los Angeles, the band had one goal: create a fresh reggae sound with a modern feel that appeals to all walks of life without compromising the true feel of roots reggae.

Founding member, Ron Montoya, was determined to recruit an all-star cast of musicians who were appreciative of 1970’s style reggae. After a vigorous search, Arise Roots became host to five extremely talented individuals who had already made a name for themselves through performing in numerous local reggae bands and backing various reggae legends coming into their area. With Ron on drums, Rudy Covarrubias towering on bass, and Todd Johnson adding his trademark mix of keys and harmonies, the band has secured a dynamic rhythm section. Lead vocalist, Karim Israel, was then added to the group, providing his raw, soulful flow which pairs up perfectly with his powerful lyrics. Last to join was lead guitarist, Robert Sotelo, who adds a solid final touch with his signature guitar solos found throughout the bands recordings and live performances.

In 2010, the band released their first EP titled, Lay Your Guns Down. Next, they received great recognition with the 2013 release of their first full-length album,Moving Forward. More recently, Arise Roots has linked up with E.N Young (Tribal Seeds) at Imperial Sound Recording Studio to work on their highly anticipated sophomore album, Love and War, due out August 5th, 2014.
