Houston's Weekend Planning Guide

     Named after the Taiwanese island from which they hail, Formosa Circus Art celebrates Taiwanese history, tradition, and culture in a once-in-a-lifetime musical circus art experience. This weekend at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Each unique performance tells a story steeped in Taiwanese history, from their earliest ancestors through today, exploring how such a small country has become such an amazing cultural influence.

With dance, acrobatics, martial arts complemented with flags, glass orbs, and lanterns this family friendly show has something for everyone.

     Formosa Circus Art was established in 2011 with the purpose of developing the contemporary circus arts of Taiwan and mixing them with other diverse styles of performance. The result is a new physical vocabulary, unique to its island of creation and combining traditional forms of movement with street culture and theater arts. FOCA’s team members come from a wide range of practices in the performing arts, including acrobatics, dance, and drama.

Since their establishment, FOCA has performed across Taiwan and abroad, including festivals and cultural events in France, Germany, Denmark, Australia, Japan, Korea, and many others. As a leader in their home country, FOCA was the first Taiwanese circus company to perform overseas and to enter the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Festival OFF D’Avignon.
